Hey, this is a site for goths, punks, scenes, scemos, skaters, rockers, and mainly emos. It's a "safe haven" for people like us, where everyone can be free of judgment, and be able to relate to others, no matter where we are.
So how to describe emo....... Well, it's not about cutting yourself, personally I don't think anyone should be cutting themselves, and it's not an 'emotion' type of thing, I don't think being depressed makes you emo at all- there are a ton of preps who are depressed and cut themselves. A depressed person isn't an emo, a depressed person is simply just a depressed person. And I also don't believe it to be a form of music, maybe it was back when 'emo' was first created, but now people have decided to be somewhat like goths, only take it down a few notches from them, and we called ourselves emo.
Emo is a style, where you wear dark clothing, like skinny jeans, or cargo pants, usually wearing black or other dark colored clothing, have straight, dark hair in your face, usually have piercings, listen to screamo, heavy metal, or just mainly rock. Emo, like every other style has a certain way of doing things, like our hair, our clothes, and makeup, everything about emo just has to be a certain way. Ok, so how the whole lil 'come to the dark side' tree works is that goth is the highest, darkest one of the rest, goth had emo, emo is the only style to make two other styles which are scene and punk, scene and emo decided to have insist and make scemo, punk had skater, and skater had rocker.
Okay, so I've been asked so many times on how to become an emo. Well, it's all about the style. The end, end of story. Okay, now that we've got past that, I can get on with the style. So, emo's wear all black or other dark colors, girls wear skinny jeans usually, or cargo pants. Boys wear either straight jeans, or skinny, rarely baggy. Band tshirts are common, tank tops are too. Sneakers or hightops are common for shoes. Suspenders are really cute when you let them just hang on your pants, wrist bands, like Avril Lavigne used to wear as a teenager is common, band necklaces or dog tags, and most emos are into studded things, not spiked, like studded belts. Emo eye makeup shows the emo style a bit, so go on youtube and just type in 'emo eye makeup' or 'emo eye makeup tutorials' and you'll find plenty of looks and how to do that look. Hair styles are usually black, straight and choppy, some hair in our faces, usually little or no volume. Girls tend to have either a spikey hair cut, or medium to long length with pin straight hair. Guys length is medium to long also, a popular emo guy hairstyle is the 'copper hand' or 'spiked' hair cut, where it's sweeping bangs in the front, and shorter and spiked out hair in the back. Otherwise, just a sweeping black haircut. Common haircuts are like Craig Mabbitt's from the music video 'Something' and 'The Flood', Ronnie Radke's is another, Beau Bokan's hairstyle is too, and Andy Sixx's haircut from 'Knives and Pens'. Pale skin is popular. Emo's also quite enjoy piercings, like I have a studded nose ring. Lip rings are quite common, and multiple piercings on the ears. Bridges, monroes, cheek piercings, just about all facial piercings, though not so much in body piercings.
As far as labels go, I'm not against labels. The people who are anti-labels are being ignorant, and scared shitless of being un-individualized. Why? Because you're INSECURE about yourself. NOW, before you all get offended by me stating this, please allow me to state WHY, because I have in fact heard time and time again WHY YOU'RE AGAINST LABELS, so please take the time to listen WHY I'M FOR LABELS.
The entire WORLD labels. A LABEL is merely a title. A name. For example, look at religions. They're technically "labels", and do you hear ANY of them throwing a fit about it? Christians, Jews, Lutherans, Mormons, so on? They don't give a fuck, they embrace the title. How about age groups? Teenagers, adults, kids, and so on. That's a "label". Same as races. Black, white, Native American, Asian, and so on. Do they take offense to it? NO. Why? Cause it's simple a title that DESCRIBES them. SAME AS A STYLE LABEL. Stop looking at labels in such a negative aspect and realize that it is no different than other daily titles we use. I'm a human being, and I accept the fact that labels are used FOR EVERYTHING. A label is just a title. Stop taking it offensively. You're no lesser a person if you're categorized. A label for a style is simply summarizing your STYLE. Not YOU. Stereotyping is the problem.
